Scare Warning

A national television show that sensationalizes pest and wildlife control work aired an episode that included working on a bat colony in June 2010.  The self proclaimed bat expert stated that bat guano is used primarily in the production of mascara, that bat guano can transmit over 33 different disease to include typhoid, dysentery, and botulism, and that bats will protect their roosting site by biting. Not only are these statements grossly incorrect, Professional Bat Management Solutions feels that any company or individual using them in their sales process are using scare tactics and should be reported.

Furthermore, Professional Bat Management Solutions wants DIY's to understand that when using netting as an exclusion tool it should be installed in such a manner that prohibits bats from hitting the netting and then having to climb down the netting as they exit the structure.  Using netting in the manner shown can cause bats to become entangled and trapped in the netting and cause other bats to not exit the structure due to distress calls of caught bats.  When this occurs, it is typical for the bats still inside the structure to search for other exits which commonly brings them in to the living space as they try to get outside.  And while Professional Bat Management Solutions acknowledges that expanding foam is a product that may be used in the bat proofing process, it should never be used as the primary sealing product.

Click on the following link to review an article by Dr. Mark Kestner, printed in the Murfreesboro Post on April 5, 2009 that discusses this issue:

http://www.murfreesboropost.com/dr-kestner-bat-poop-in-mascara-you-re-kidding-right-cms-16269.  Professional Bat Management Solutions also recommends contacting mascara manufactures regarding this claim for those that are still uncertain as to what their product contains.

Disease information can be obtained from the Center for Disease Control, www.cdc.gov, regarding typhoid, dysentery, and botulism.  Note that the CDC does not list bat guano as being a source for the transmission of these diseases.  The CDC does recognize bat guano as a potential source for the disease histoplasmosis.  To find out more about bat guano and the risks of histoplasmosis click here.
